Nush and the Stolen Emerald is a historical mystery from Costa Award winner Jasbinder Bilan.
Anushka, an Indian princess, is enraged that the British East India Company has not only taken their land but also her family's priceless emerald - a precious jewel the size of an apple. When her father, the Maharaja, decides to visit Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace, Nush is determined to go too. Her plan? To steal back the wondrous gem and restore peace to her country.
This is a jewel of a book - sparkling with all the colour and vivacity of India. Anushka is smart and courageous and the story twists its way through India and Victorian England with equal skill. There's plenty of adventure as we follow the intrepid Nush on her quest and some interesting themes of colonialism, birthright and gender.
I'd recommend it for upper middle grade.
