A new reader!

Abigail Sophia has just been born.

She is tiny, delightful bundle of joy, especially for her parents who are still trying to adjust to their new role. When her mother first faced the world it was just as exciting, and watching her grow up through childhood to motherhood, has been a fascinating voyage of discovery.

One of the most wonderful things about children is watching them as they grow, slowly discovering the world around them. The books they read, or have read to them, on this journey, introduce the strange world where everything is new and extraordinary.

Because children are constantly trying to make sense of the world the books they need are quite different at each stage. This seems quite obvious so it is always amazing when people approach me saying they want to write for children but have no idea what age/stage they want to write for, or what kind of books would be suitable or are published for that age/stage of development. Do they mean they want to write a picture book, an easy reader, a short or a longer novel and what makes each of these different?

I know I am going to delight in sharing picture books with little Abigail Sophia and reading to her as she moves on through the wonderful world of books.

Both her mother and I have great collections of contemporary and classic children’s fiction, many of these written by members of the Scattered Authors and some by those who contribute to this blog.

We have many hours of entertainment ahead!

Congratulations, Linda. So pleased to hear of Abigail Sophia's safe arrival. How wonderful to be reminded of new beginnings (that's tautology, isn't it, but you know what I mean). Enjoy!

How strange - exactly the names of my second daughter. And I'm a Linda (skipped a generation)!

My congratulations too.
