I wanted to review this book anyway but it seems sadly appropriate at the moment.
In a different war at a different time 'When the War Came Home' by Lesley Parr is set in the Welsh Valleys after the first world war ended. Welsh language references are scattered throughout and evoke an affectionate glimpse of the culture.
It's an engrossing historical mystery and a hopeful story of friendship and the strength of the human spirit.
Forced to move to a new village due to her mother's revolutionary spirit, Natty meets two young soldiers deeply traumatised by their war experiences. In order to help them Natty must keep a secret and unravel a mystery.
Parr skillfully weaves the various threads of this tale and creates a compelling book of relevance. Twelve-year-old Natty, the main character, is desperate to help her cousin and his friend and also come to terms with her own situation.
Although a gentle read this book doesn't shy away from strong themes of poverty, mental health issues and displacement. I'd recommend this historical children's novel for ages 8-10 years.

Thanks, Sharon. Hoping that this new book about war helps young readers.
I think this looks great, and you have reminded me to buy it. I loved her first book.
Sounds good!
