'THE BUG GIRL' by Sophia Spencer and Margaret McNamara. Reviewed by Sharon Tregenza

This is a charming book and will definitely interest children who love nature, but it was the back story that interested me.

From a very early age Canadian schoolgirl Sophia Spencer loved insects but some of the other kids bullied her for her unusual interest. When they killed her beloved grasshopper she stopped talking about bugs altogether.

Sophia's mother wrote to an entomological society asking if any of the scientists would be willing to be a pen pal to her daughter. They were overwhelmed by the response as videos, photos and letters poured in.

Using the hashtag BugsR4Girls scientists tweeted hundreds of time to tell Sophia not to give up her love of insects - and it worked.

The book is a mix of fiction and non-fiction centred around Sophia's true story and co-authored by Margaret McNamara. Kerascoet, a husband and wife team, add the delicate water colour illustrations to complete this delightful and unusual book.
