RICHARD SCARRY
Richard Scarry was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 5th, 1919. His family were financially secure and he had a happy upbringing. His career as an author and illustrator of children's books took off in the 1950's when Little Golden Books began to publish his work.
But it was in 1963 that Scarry made his real breakthrough with 'Richard Scarry's Best World Book Ever'. This book featured more than 1,400 objects and sold seven million copies in twelve years.
Over his long career he wrote or illustrated more than 300 books, selling over 300 million copies worldwide.
In 1968 the Scarry family moved to Lausanne, Switzerland and in 1972 bought a chalet in Gstaad, where he founded his studio. He died there on April 30th, 1994.

2. He collaborated with his wife Patsy Scarry on several books.
3. At one point, 8 of the 50 best-selling children's books of all time, were his.
4. The character "Huckle Cat" is named for Richard Scarry's son, Richard Scarry junior.
5. Lowly Worm wasn't meant to be a star, but after lots of fan mail from children, Scarry made him a main character.

I recall a group of five year old boys who loved to gather round a big Scarry book on the class carpet and chat so enthusiastically about the characters and happenings. Richard Scarry was a great favourite at home too. Thanks for this reminder.
