National Share a Story Month... by Dawn Finch

May is one of my favourite months for reading matters because it is National Share a Story Month (NSSM) and there is nothing I like more than sharing stories. The Federation of Children's Book Groups share our love of stories too, and every year they bring us the wonderful celebration of reading and sharing stories that is NSSM.

Right across the UK schools, libraries and reading groups build events around the annual theme of NSSM, and the theme for May 2019 is Travelling Tales. These Travelling Tales can be stories of any sort of journey - trains, boats, planes... or journeys through time, or space... there are literally no limits! Travelling through the landscape, or through life. Quests of time and space, or quests of personal discovery.

As I am off on a particularly important new journey of my own this month, I keep this blog very short and will instead leave you to discover the wonders of NSSM for yourselves via the Federation of Children's Book Groups website where you can join in the fun, and find lots of support to hold your own event.

The Federation says..."Anyone interested in joining in is encouraged to hold story sharing sessions, events encompassing art, craft, and cultural activity.  Why not try an event in an unusual place – like a Heritage Railway, or a transport museum – great for stimulating ideas and discussion around travelling stories!

There are ideas for competitions – and lots of lovely book-related prizes generously donated by many publishers.  The winners will be celebrated on our website – but do also send news of your planned activities too.  There will be interesting blogs from authors, illustrators and other bookish people on the website during May – check them out!"
