Library buyers should be more courageous! There is so much more but you probably need to visit a serious comics shop to find them.

@Richard; I too love the books you mention and could tell a few stories about their creation, as I witnessed it first hand, as desk editor or pal of the creators, but these are the very well known instances from the '80s, all written by Alan Moore, which gave rise to the Titan Books slogan dreamt up by Igor Goldkind, their publicist at the time: 'the comics have grown up'. Yes they had, but it took a while for publishers to do anything but put out the odd 'serious' book. Most flooded the market with overpriced repackaging of earlier serialised material which often walked out of shops under people's jackets because they couldn't afford them. It took a while for the market to recover from this and for an abundance of non-SF/superhero fare to emerge from the hands of the kind of creators mentioned in this book.

BTW I should mention that Paul has curated the current show at the British Library: Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK - http://www.bl.uk/whatson/exhibitions/comics-unmasked/ Go see if you're in town!DavidKThorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04215770376688861114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-12814214517121063212014-04-04T20:06:59.341+01:002014-04-04T20:06:59.341+01:00These look amazing - and challenging! I'd add some old favourites to your list, the first two which were turned into movies with the same success as books generally are -- they became pale shades of the original:
V for Vendetta, which includes the superb This Vicious Cabaret which was missing from the movie because almost every subject it referenced had been cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpzgr-ccnb8 And yes, the comic includes the music.
The Watchmen -- Which misses out the parallel, incredibly dark story being read in a comic within a comic.
The Ballad of Halo Jones -- When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09799125598133377058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-20662709394616806912014-04-04T18:25:22.315+01:002014-04-04T18:25:22.315+01:00I'm passing this on to a friend in South Afric...I'm passing this on to a friend in South Africa whose son is a graphic novel artist. The blog is fascinating David and is particularly right for now when so many people are turning to graphic novels. I was surprised at how much shelf space is taken up by them at my local library. Shows they are being taken seriously.
