It sounds amazing. Helen my wife would like to know more about the horse skull violins. She is a Fire Horse in Chinese astrology. I'm a Wood Horse, Savita! Also a Sagittarian (half horse). Not that I believe in astrology but it is interesting.
Bea - hope the Globe event was fun.
Catherine - I don't know the poem. Thanks will check it out. Horse skulls feat...That's a very spooky horse!

Horse skulls feature in my YA book (horse skull violins played by the shamans of the Mongolian steppe), which I've been writing off and on for years, so your post seems to be sending me a very clear message - finish the book!

And Savita says it's the Chinese Year of the Horse too... a shiver is now going down my spine. A rough translation of the Welsh that gets the meaning more or less is:
Wishing you happiness to start the New Year
While the man is clanging the bells
We hope you have good health every day.DavidKThorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04215770376688861114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-85348786381633165742014-01-04T12:37:34.170+00:002014-01-04T12:37:34.170+00:00What a wonderful post to find here today! It's terrifying! Yours looks pretty scary too - love the flashing eye-balls...

There are, or were, similar traditions throughout England although the grey/white horse is only Welsh as far as I know. In shaman cultures in south Siberia, horses' skulls play a big role - you often find them hanging on trees near shepherds' summer pastures. While in central and eastern Europe a quite similar cast of characters traditionally goes from house to house at new year performing a ritual dialogue at each one.

Could you translate the farewell song? I don't know if Susan Cooper had this in mind with her name of the Merlin character, though you never know with this writer and there was certainly a lot of other folklore stuff in it. I always thought the name Merriman Lyon was just meant to be a clue to who he was, and one of the characters does work it out.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy yourselves and get lots of drinks out of it! :-)Sue Bursztynskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09362273418897882971noreply@blogger.com
