The trick is do it in a controlled way, so you can observe and guide - and get back out of their heads.
Actors, particularly those in a TV series, often complain that their character is taking over their life and personality.
I had a psychologist friend who was extraordinarily good at relating to psychotics. His trick was to let himself be 99% psychotic. He used to joke that he worried he might someime go that last 1% and never come back.
Guess every profession has it's risks, eh?steeleweedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02077739629921574784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-26729921098614036892009-11-02T19:25:04.394+00:002009-11-02T19:25:04.394+00:00Ahh the life of published writers with their own w...Ahh the life of published writers with their own writing room...wonderful!Nayuleskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08693548526829437580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-88527145182063658502009-11-02T19:22:01.085+00:002009-11-02T19:22:01.085+00:00Yes, Yunaleska, it is 'Tuscany' my writing...Yes, Yunaleska, it is 'Tuscany' my writing shed in the garden, a great place to escape to!Linda Strachanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04354324158228109351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-20074461766472376812009-11-02T15:31:44.990+00:002009-11-02T15:31:44.990+00:00If that's your writing room, I love it! I tell them I get to be anyone and do anything I like, every single day. Of course, that might get in the way of all that essential 'creative-writing' plotting and planning...

I also vividly remember getting funny looks from a couple of other writers when I mentioned how much fun, but how alarming, it could be getting inside characters' heads. They didn't know what I was on about, and said 'Good lord, do you really? How odd.' Which would explain why I never gave a flying toss about any of their characters, then...Gillian Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17775401199564200537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-77733359736359481212009-11-02T12:54:52.598+00:002009-11-02T12:54:52.598+00:00Interesting post about dark and light, Linda. Have had some funny looks from teachers when I've started explaining that one of the great things about writing is that you can "be" all the different characters. You aren't stuck with being the third tree from the left - though you can be that as well!Penny Dolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16386668303428008498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7780182174577095197.post-69822826728688129202009-11-02T12:44:16.188+00:002009-11-02T12:44:16.188+00:00That's almost exactly what I say to children w...That's almost exactly what I say to children when I'm speaking to them! That being a writer is like having a dressing-up box in the corner! Also, starting to write is like diving off the side of swimming pool. You know you like swimming when you get in, but the jump is a bit scary!adelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15826710558292792068noreply@blogger.com
